As you may be aware, California passed legislation mandating that plumbing products be “lead free” by January 1st, 2010. This legislation, California Assembly Bill 1953 (AB 1953), “prohibits the introduction into commerce of any pipe, pipe or plumbing fitting or fixture, solder, or flux that is not lead free, as defined, in the installation or repair of any public water system or any plumbing in a facility providing water for human consumption.”
The new law defines “lead free” products as containing no “more than 0.25%” lead.
Matco-Norca is actively working to provide products that are 100% compliant with California law, well in advance of January, 2010. Furthermore, California has a history of being the “first” state to enact new environmental regulation, while other states tend to follow California’s lead. We anticipate that “lead free” plumbing products (as defined by AB 1953) will gradually become the standard across the USA in months and years to come.
As the leading supplier of globally sourced, code-compliant Plumbing & PVF products for use in residential, commercial and industrial applications, Matco-Norca has a self imposed deadline of September 30th, 2009 to offer “lead free” compliant products to our California customers, whereby shelves are stocked on or before this date.
